A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eppc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Embryo-Genetic-Screening-Polling-and-Policies-11-25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new survey<\/a>&nbsp;from the Ethics and Public Policy Center and YouGov, however, found that Americans\u2019 concerns about unregulated reproductive technology, such as IVF, are far more widespread when questions center on the morally and ethically contentious practice of screening embryos for those traits deemed less desirable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">According to the results of the November 2025 Future of the Family Survey, four out of five of the 1,100 18-to-45-year-olds polled had \u201cat least a little concern about genetic screening of embryos.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"811\" height=\"413\" src=\"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/4-in-5-have-concerns.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/4-in-5-have-concerns.jpg 811w, https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/4-in-5-have-concerns-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/4-in-5-have-concerns-768x391.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 811px) 100vw, 811px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Overall, women showed slightly more concern about the genetic testing of embryos than men. Older women, approximately 83 percent of females 46 years and over, showed the most concern about \u201callowing parents to choose their embryo\u2019s characteristics, like eye color, IQ, or athletic ability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Because IVF is so expensive and risky, fertility specialists often tout genetic testing as standard practice for embryos produced in a lab. Research, however,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2021\/11\/26\/ivf-pregnancy-pgta-genetic-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shows<\/a>&nbsp;that one of the most common embryo screening regimens, PGT-A, does not increase the likelihood of a healthy pregnancy or baby. Instead, it gives parents an excuse to discard or indefinitely freeze embryos that receive a \u201cless than\u201d grade. Already,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/life\/report\/why-the-ivf-industry-must-be-regulated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">93<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/gop-attempts-define-position-discarding-ivf-embryos-pro-life-stances\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">97<\/a>&nbsp;percent of test tube babies will not make it to birth or even a womb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2021\/05\/05\/16-states-now-ban-abortions-on-babies-with-down-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">illegal in several states<\/a>&nbsp;to abort unborn babies who receive a prenatal chromosomal abnormality diagnosis. IVF biotech startups \u201cbacked by billions of dollars,\u201d such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/07\/orchid-healths-genome-testing-promises-healthy-babies-but-delivers-morally-deplorable-eugenics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Orchid<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/06\/06\/under-the-guise-of-preventative-medicine-for-ivf-eugenics-is-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nucleus<\/a>, however, sell a process for culling embryos, testing them&nbsp;for potential diseases, disorders, cancers, defects, and chromosomal abnormalities without legal repercussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">They claim ranking embryonic life and discarding the little lives that don\u2019t make the cut is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/08\/08\/ceo-of-ivf-eugenics-company-orchid-claims-culling-embryos-is-a-positive-moral-choice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cpositive moral choice\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/08\/21\/destroying-embryos-for-eugenics-or-not-is-nothing-short-of-murder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cprevent[s] \u2026 diseases.\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;Their quest is boosted by leading fertility industry activists such as the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, which hails such polygenic screenings as an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asrm.org\/news-and-events\/asrm-news\/tech-talk-blogs\/27-june-2025-unlocking-the-future-of-ivf-navigating-the-complex-world-of-ivf-genomics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cexciting\u201d addition<\/a>&nbsp;to the array of genetic tests IVF clients can use to determine which of their embryos gets a chance at life outside of a cryopreservation tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This technology, the EPPC brief notes, is \u201cstill unproven.\u201d Yet its widespread use could further commodify children created with reproductive technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThis would radically change the nature of parenthood, turning would-be parents from recipients of the gift of a new child to consumers looking for a product made to order,\u201d the brief continues. \u201cIt would undermine social support and research funding into diseases that would have otherwise been screened out, casting parents who have children naturally as taking an unacceptable risk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Appetite for Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Despite moral, ethical, and functional questions about IVF, President Donald Trump has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/10\/21\/trumps-desire-for-more-american-babies-is-good-his-newest-ivf-plan-is-not\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">repeatedly promised to<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cincrease access\u201d to the reproductive technology \u201cto make it easier for all couples to have babies, raise children, and start the families they\u2019ve always dreamed about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"848\" height=\"442\" src=\"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Embryo-screening-poll.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Embryo-screening-poll.jpg 848w, https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Embryo-screening-poll-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Embryo-screening-poll-768x400.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 848px) 100vw, 848px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A majority of Trump\u2019s voters, however, think embryo screening for sex selection, physical traits, cosmetic traits, personality traits, and projected intelligence should be outlawed. Only when it comes to screening embryos for \u201cpredicted medical traits like congenital disease or inherited disorders\u201d did the number of Trump 2024 voters who claimed they were \u201cokay with being legal, but I wouldn\u2019t use it myself\u201d outpace those who said the practice \u201cshould be illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Even then, 37 percent of MAGA supporters still expressed the desire to ban health-prediction embryo screening. Only 21 percent of Trump voters said they were \u201cglad\u201d such screenings existed and claimed they would \u201cuse it myself if given the option,\u201d compared to the 45 percent of Kamala Harris voters who said the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Overall, most adults who cast their votes for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election said they were okay with embryo screening across the other categories being legal, but agreed, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t use it myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">While the total number of adults willing to utilize genetic embryo testing remained a minority, the EPPC brief about the survey data warned \u201cthat share is likely to grow over time if these tools are culturally normalized and achieve economies of scale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\"><em><strong>Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By: Jordan Boyd, originally published November 19, 2025, The Federalist American adults are uneasy about the eugenics-like methods the fertility industry has built into reproductive technology such as IVF.
