A University of Toledo Medical Center surgery resident has been suspended from practicing medicine in Ohio after admitting to secretly obtaining and administering abortion drugs to a pregnant woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ohio State Medical Board on November 5 issued an emergency suspension<\/a>\u00a0of Dr. Hassan-James Abbas\u2019 medical license, finding \u201cclear and convincing evidence\u201d that his actions posed \u201can immediate danger\u201d to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The board\u2019s notice detailed Abbas\u2019 alleged use of his estranged wife\u2019s personal information to order the drugs and his subsequent forcible administration of them to his girlfriend, who had refused an abortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman, who is seeking a protective order against Abbas, described the ordeal as a violation of her autonomy and health.  And she\u2019s concerned the University of Toledo didn\u2019t take the abortion assault on her seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s important for people to know that UTMC says they hold their employees to the highest standards; however, they have had this information since the beginning of this year and they chose to still employ him and not place him on leave until now,\u201d she told the AP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abbas, 32, began a romantic relationship with the woman, identified in board documents as Patient 1, after separating from his wife in October 2024. She informed him of her pregnancy, and he urged her to have an abortion, according to the board\u2019s findings. She refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day, Abbas ordered mifepristone and misoprostol \u2014the drugs used to kill babies in abortions\u2014 from an out-of-state abortion pill seller. He placed the order using his estranged wife\u2019s name, date of birth and driver\u2019s license number without her consent, while charging his own credit card and directing delivery to his address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A week later, the woman awoke to find Abbas physically restraining her. He allegedly held her down, forced crushed abortion medication into her mouth and ignored her resistance. She fought free, fled to the kitchen and called 911, but Abbas seized her phone and ended the call, the board\u2019s notice stated. A hang-up call was logged at 4:50 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman drove herself to a hospital emergency department, arriving at 5:59 a.m. Her chief complaint was documented as an assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a July interview with board investigators, Abbas admitted researching and ordering the abortion drugs after learning of the pregnancy. He confessed to using his estranged wife\u2019s identifying information without permission, crushing the pills to dissolve faster and deviating from administration instructions based on his own judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abbas claimed the woman had agreed to take the medication but acknowledged forcibly administering it around 4 a.m., taking her phone to end the 911 call and discarding the remaining pills by throwing them out his car window on the way to work<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The board alleged Abbas violated Ohio law by prescribing and administering drugs for non-therapeutic purposes, committing felonies including identity fraud, deception to obtain a dangerous drug, unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug, abduction, disrupting public services and tampering with evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abbas has 30 days to request a hearing. The board could revoke his license permanently, barring him from ever practicing in Ohio, and impose fines up to $20,000. The suspension passed with all members voting in favor except one abstention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UTMC placed Abbas on administrative leave after the suspension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDr. Hassan Abbas, a surgical resident at The University of Toledo, was placed on administrative leave after the State Medical Board of Ohio suspended his license on Wednesday, Nov. 5,\u201d the hospital said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucas County Sheriff\u2019s Office search warrants from late December 2024 and early January 2025 targeted Abbas\u2019 family home, citing suspicions of attempted murder, assault and disrupting public services. One warrant sought evidence related to the misoprostol purchase via Abbas\u2019 computer. No criminal charges have been filed, Sheriff Mike Navarre said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ohio Right to Life Executive Director Carrie Snyder emailed LifeNews about the case:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese allegations against the doctor are sickening and frightening, and highlight one of the many dangers women face from abortion drugs. Beyond the potential serious medical complications from taking the drugs, women face the unknown danger of a partner acquiring abortion pills and attempting to give them the drugs without their knowledge or consent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf the allegations are true, this is attempted murder, plain and simple.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRadical activist judges in Ohio have continued to block Ohio laws that would limit easy access to abortion pills. They bear some responsibility for this. We look forward to the Ohio Supreme Court overturning the lower court ruling. In the meantime, Ohio Right to Life calls on the legislature to pass HB 324, the Patient Protection Act, which would prevent situations like this from happening by restoring common sense laws in the prescription of the dangerous abortion drug mifepristone. We will also pursue other ways to restore the protections of women which have been stripped away by judges who are subverting the will of Ohio voters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
