Our newly installed Archbishop of Cincinnati previously served faithfully as an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Chicago before being called to shepherd our local Church. We look forward to his guidance and firm defense of the unborn, especially at a time when clarity and courage are needed within the wider Church.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Cupcih-pic-1024x500.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Cupcih-pic-1024x500.png 1024w, https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Cupcih-pic-300x146.png 300w, https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Cupcih-pic-768x375.png 768w, https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Cupcih-pic-1536x750.png 1536w, https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Cupcih-pic.png 1672w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Ohio\u2019s abortion laws remain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/us\/abortion-laws-roe-v-wade.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>tragically close to those of Illinois<\/strong>,<\/a> and <strong>both states experience an evil amount of innocent bloodshed from the preborn each year<\/strong>. Yet even amid these challenges, we are grateful for signs of hope. We thank God for <strong>Senator Jon Husted\u2019s appointment to fill JD Vance\u2019s Senate seat<\/strong> and for <strong>Bernie Moreno\u2019s victory over Sherrod Brown in last November\u2019s election<\/strong>\u2014two pro-life leaders who will stand boldly in defense of the unborn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Against this backdrop of both challenge and hope, troubling news has emerged from Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Cardinal Cupich Honors Pro-Abortion Senator<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cardinal Blase Cupich, head of the Archdiocese of Chicago, plans to honor radically pro-abortion <a href=\"https:\/\/nrlc.org\/nrlnewstoday\/2025\/02\/a-look-back-carefully-exposing-the-holes-in-pro-abortion-sen-dick-durbins-evasive-answer-about-late-term-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Senator Dick Durbin<\/strong><\/a> with a <strong>Lifetime Achievement Award<\/strong> at the \u201cKeep Hope Alive\u201d Benefit on November 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The announcement has triggered immediate and widespread backlash among pro-life Catholics, who see the move as a scandalous betrayal of the unborn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Pro-Life Advocates Condemn the Award<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.illinoisrighttolife.org\/blog\/llm2jgadmwik0ax2q6b73gjyyivbyh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Illinois Right to Life<\/strong><\/a>, a leading statewide pro-life organization, condemned the decision in sharp terms. The award is being presented by the Archdiocese\u2019s Office of Human Dignity and Solidarity, a choice that pro-lifers say blatantly contradicts the Church\u2019s defense of the dignity of every human life.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Crying-Illinois-Babies-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34921\" style=\"width:360px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Crying-Illinois-Babies-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Crying-Illinois-Babies.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe Church emphasizes that human beings are integrated persons and that we cannot live in spiritual harmony if we are denying even one aspect of the truth of the faith,\u201d said Illinois Right to Life President Mary Kate Zander. \u201cPresenting Dick Durbin with an award \u2013 and from the Office of Human Dignity, no less \u2013 is an explicitly inconsistent and un-Catholic choice by Cardinal Cupich. Not only does it cause scandal among the faithful by creating confusion, it also puts the Senator\u2019s soul at risk by failing to hold him accountable for his refusal to oppose abortion in the U.S. Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In addition to Illinois Right to Life, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicculture.org\/news\/headlines\/index.cfm?storyid=66999\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Springfield,<\/strong><\/a><strong> Durbin\u2019s home diocese, as well as <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2025\/09\/22\/catholic-bishops-tell-cardinal-cupich-to-cancel-award-for-pro-abortion-senator-dick-durbin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Archbishop Cordileone of San Francisco<\/strong><\/a><strong>, have publicly criticized the award<\/strong>, underscoring the seriousness of the scandal and the disunity it creates within the Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Durbin\u2019s Anti-Life Record<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sbaprolife.org\/senator\/dick-durbin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Senator Durbin<\/strong>,<\/a> who has long claimed to be Catholic, has built a career consistently voting against protections for the unborn. Since being elected to the Senate in 1997, he has opposed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The <strong>Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act<\/strong>, prohibiting the most brutal late-term abortion procedures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The <strong>Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act<\/strong>, which would ban abortions after 20 weeks, when unborn children can feel pain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The <strong>Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act<\/strong>, requiring life-saving care for babies born alive after failed abortions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Durbin also strongly supported the <strong>Women\u2019s Health Protection Act<\/strong>, a sweeping measure that sought to enshrine Roe v. Wade into federal law and permit abortions up to birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">His hostility toward faithful Catholics has also been evident. During the 2020 hearings for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, he questioned her about being an \u201corthodox Catholic\u201d and whether she wore a rosary\u2014remarks that many Catholics considered dismissive and discriminatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In 2021, Durbin was <strong>barred from receiving Holy Communion<\/strong> in his home diocese of Springfield, Illinois, by Bishop Thomas Paprocki because of his unwavering pro-abortion record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Cupich\u2019s Troubling Alignment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cardinal Cupich\u2019s decision to bestow this award on Durbin comes on the heels of his prominent role at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where he offered the opening prayer despite the party\u2019s long-standing embrace of abortion as a \u201ccore value.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">By honoring Durbin, Cupich not only deepens the scandal of Catholic leaders siding with pro-abortion politicians but also undermines the faithful witness of bishops across the country who have taken firm stands in defense of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Tragedy in Chicago<\/strong> Even more alarming, in Chicago\u2014<strong>in close proximity to the Archdiocesan offices\u2014<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/chicago-abortion-clinic-opens-offering-controversial-third-trimester-abortions?msockid=2710f6d7d0266c8406cfe2f1d1ab6d37\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>a nearly full-term abortion business has opened, disguised as a boutique.<\/strong><\/a> Instead of celebrating pro-abortion politicians with awards, the local shepherd should be sounding a clear moral outcry against the killing of preborn children sacrificed in what amounts to a modern-day human slaughter. The silence of leadership in the face of such blatant evil only compounds the scandal and deepens the wound to the Body of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Call to Action for the Faithful<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Illinois Right to Life is urging Catholics to speak out against this grave scandal.
