The Biden administration misrepresented data on chemical abortion pill mifepristone to obfuscate safety issues with the drug, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. said Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kennedy appeared before the Senate Finance Committee where Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford asked him about ongoing FDA review of safety protocols for mifepristone. Kennedy confirmed that a review was progressing and said that in the process it was determined that the Biden administration had \u201ctwisted\u201d the data on mifepristone\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’re getting data in all the time, new data that we’re reviewing, and we know that during the Biden administration, they actually twisted the data to bury one of the safety signals with a very high safety signal of around of 11%,\u201d Kennedy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, we’re going to make sure that that doesn’t happen anymore,\u201d he added. \u201cWe’re producing honest science and gold standard science on that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

FDA review of mifepristone is hotly contested, with pro-life advocates hoping the federal agency\u00a0will reinstate<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0the drug\u2019s safety standards and otherwise act to protect women, while\u00a0abortion proponents<\/a>\u00a0claim<\/a>\u00a0mifepristone<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0as safe as Tylenol<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0argue that<\/a>\u00a0safety regulations<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for the drug\u00a0impede access<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mifepristone<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is the first of two drugs in a chemical abortion, the abortion method that has surpassed surgical abortion to be\u00a0the most common<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0through\u00a0rampant<\/a>\u00a0ease of access<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and minimal oversight. The drug\u00a0has been shown<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to be\u00a0four times more dangerous<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0than surgical abortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A groundbreaking analysis released in April of 865,000 insurance claims of women who were prescribed mifepristone abortions from 2017 to 2023 found that mifepristone is\u00a022<\/strong>\u00a0time<\/strong><\/a>s<\/a><\/strong> more dangerous<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0than\u00a0previously recognized<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in FDA data. The report by conservative think tank Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) said that\u00a0nearly 11% of women<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0experience sepsis, infection, hemorrhaging, or another serious adverse event within 45 days of taking the drug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FDA<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0uses is a drug safety program known as REMS (Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies) for medications \u201cwith serious safety concerns<\/a><\/strong>\u201d to make certain the benefits of the drug outweigh its risks. Of the 20,000+ prescription drugs approved by the FDA, just 74 drugs have been deemed dangerous enough to warrant a REMS restriction – and one of those is mifepristone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mifepristone was first\u00a0approved in 2000<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in a process that some\u00a0contend<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0was hurried,\u00a0at<\/strong>\u00a0odds with<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0science and law, and pervaded by politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FDA<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0then loosened its own safety standards on the drug in 2016 under President Barack Obama\u00a0and 2021<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0under President Joe Biden.\u00a0Part of this reduction of safety standards\u00a0has included<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0eliminating the requirement that\u00a0abortion providers report non-fatal adverse events<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>to the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The safeguards<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0mifepristone<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>removed by the FDA over\u00a0the last nine years<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0include an initial in-person doctor visit to screen for ectopic pregnancy and other serious conditions, and a follow-up visit to check for life-threatening complications, such as internal bleeding and infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FDA then further lessened its REMS requirements for chemical abortion drugs, permitting them\u00a0to be dispensed<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>by pharmacies and delivered\u00a0via mail<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0The Biden administration made access to the drug\u00a0without in-person dispensing<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0permanent in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FDA data shows that\u00a0at least 32 women have died<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0following mifepristone use between the drug\u2019s approval in 2000 and 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The head of the largest network of pregnancy help organizations in the U.S. said that Kennedy\u2019s admission before the Senate Finance Committee was not surprising and questioned whether the Trump administration would correct the FDA data for the good of women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is no surprise to learn an abortion politician has intentionally twisted data,\u201d said Jor-El Godsey, president of Heartbeat International. \u201cThey’ve been doing this for years with the other researched aspect of abortion by denying the negative effects on women.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe bigger question,\u201d Godsey said, \u201cis once finding it, will this administration have the courage to correct the analysis and act to protect the public?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heartbeat International\u2019s Director of Government Relations noted the Biden administration\u2019s handling of the FDA data on mifepristone put women at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re sad but not surprised to learn that the Biden FDA deliberately twisted the data and turned a blind eye to details about how abortion drugs have hurt women,\u201d Jessica Prol Smith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heartbeat International had submitted an amicus brief in\u00a0FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, the Supreme Court case where a\u00a0group<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>of pro-life doctors and organizations had challenged the FDA’s decision to remove its\u00a0health and safety<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0measures for mifepristone, SCOTUS ultimately\u00a0ruling<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that the doctors did not have standing – but\u00a0upholding their conscience rights<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0refraining from ruling on the merits of the case<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heartbeat had\u00a0argued in its brief that<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0the FDA put women at risk by lowering the standard of care for treating pregnant mothers when it relaxed its own rules for chemical abortion drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heartbeat International\u00a0submitted an amicus brief<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0GenBioPro v. Raynes<\/em>\u00a0as well, in support of the state of West Virginia\u2019s right\u00a0to regulate chemical abortion pills<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the more minor side effects\u00a0possible with mifepristone<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>are cramping, nausea, and vomiting.\u00a0Severe complications<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that require immediate medical attention include extremely heavy bleeding, severe infection, and retained tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside from the risks, many chemical abortions result in the mother left to deliver her deceased child at home or\u00a0in other circumstances<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0without medical oversight, and quite often women have not been prepared for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro-life concerns<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>also\u00a0include<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0the likelihood for\u00a0the drug<\/a>\u00a0to be used<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0human trafficking<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0other<\/a>\u00a0situations<\/a>\u00a0involving<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0abuse<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0coercion<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kennedy said earlier this year on the day of his confirmation as HHS Secretary that President Donald Trump had\u00a0asked him to study the safety of mifepristone<\/a><\/strong>. In May following release of the EPPC study Kennedy said the FDA\u00a0should change the label on mifepristone<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and perform a top-to-bottom review of the drug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary had said during his confirmation hearing in March that he would take a “solid, hard look<\/a><\/strong>” at the data on mifepristone. After\u00a0stating in April<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0he had no plans to take action on mifepristone Makary confirmed in June the FDA would\u00a0conduct a review of mifepristone<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Sept. 4 Senate Finance Committee hearing, Kennedy pledged to keep Lankford and Montana Sen. Steve Daines apprised of the FDA review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daines had called the claims that mifepristone is as safe as Tylenol \u201cmisleading\u201d and \u201cvery harmful,\u201d and questioned Kennedy about reinstating the in-person prescribing requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prol Smith praised the pro-life lawmakers and called on the FDA to protect women in keeping with the agency\u2019s purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re grateful to see pro-life Senators Daines and Lankford providing oversight, and we join them in asking this FDA to do its job,\u201d she said. \u201cWe know that health research and policy seem constantly controversial. But American women simply deserve better than the lies and half-truths they\u2019ve gotten from abortion advocates who happen to hold government jobs.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
