{"id":34610,"date":"2025-08-15T17:33:03","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T17:33:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/?p=34610"},"modified":"2025-08-15T17:33:04","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T17:33:04","slug":"study-84-of-aid-access-abortion-pills-go-to-states-with-pro-life-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/study-84-of-aid-access-abortion-pills-go-to-states-with-pro-life-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"Study:  84% of &#8216;Aid Access&#8217; abortion pills go to states with pro-life laws"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong><em>By:  Calvin Freiburger, originally published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/study-84-of-aid-access-abortion-pills-go-to-states-with-pro-life-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">August 13, 2025, LifeSite News<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\" style=\"font-size:26px\"><strong>The European abortion network Aid Access is sending tens of thousands of illegal pills into states with pro-life laws, enabled by Democrat states\u2019 \u2018shield laws.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LifeSiteNews<\/a>) \u2014 The vast majority of the so-called \u201ctelehealth\u201d abortion business assists residents of pro-life states break laws protecting preborn babies from abortion, according to a new paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>Medpage Today<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medpagetoday.com\/obgyn\/abortion\/116936?xid=nl_mpt_DHE_2025-08-11&amp;mh=ba755b2b3eb70843f7964adad5159265&amp;zdee=gAAAAABm4vbhWraEGK4h3xRCp1lVJfnqBmYr3Imi_zNrQyrTqK50YvCCsv2IIFpPnPV-eJoxAh9gVOkLLskMCOd_Ss7nz0ND_HIoT7kM7g_cJghEfnz9ZK8%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a>&nbsp;that the study, published by the&nbsp;<em>Journal of the American Medical Association<\/em>&nbsp;(JAMA), examines data from 118,338 chemical abortion pill packs dispensed over a 15-month span (the beginning of July 2023 to the end of September 2024) by the pro-abortion group Aid Access (whose founder Rebecca Gomperts was one of the study\u2019s co-authors).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It found that 84 percent of those packs were sent to states that do not allow abortion pills to be prescribed without seeing a doctor in-person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cOne plausible contributor [to abortions remaining high despite pro-life laws] is the rise of online asynchronous telemedicine abortion services \u2013 particularly those operating under shield laws, which allow U.S.-licensed clinicians to provide abortion medications to patients in ban states with protection from legal liability,\u201d the authors theorized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Aid Access&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aidaccess.org\/en\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a>&nbsp;its purpose is to supply abortion pills to women who do not \u201chave the possibility of accessing local abortion services.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But while the study indicates it is successful at its stated mission, the lack of oversight comes at a cost above and beyond the death of preborn babies \u2013 this week LifeSiteNews\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/woman-sues-abortion-pill-network-after-father-of-her-unborn-child-kills-baby-with-spiked-drink\/?utm_source=most_recent&amp;utm_campaign=catholic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">covered<\/a>\u00a0one case of a woman suing Aid Access for providing the father of her child abortion pills that he fed her without her knowledge by dissolving them into her drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/full-list-abortion-is-now-illegal-in-at-least-10-states-more-to-follow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twelve states<\/a>\u00a0currently ban all or most abortions. But the unregulated, no-oversight distribution of contraceptive and abortion pills across state lines has become arguably the abortion lobby\u2019s most effective tactic for preserving abortion \u201caccess.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In November 2022, Operation Rescue&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.operationrescue.org\/archives\/national-survey-88-abortion-facilities-close-as-abortion-pill-businesses-surge-in-post-roe-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that a net decrease of 36 abortion facilities in 2022 led to the lowest number in almost 50 years, yet the chemical abortion business \u201csurged\u201d with 64 percent of new facilities built last year specializing in dispensing mifepristone and misoprostol. Citing data from the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute,&nbsp;STAT&nbsp;says mifepristone \u201caccounts for roughly half of all abortions in the U.S.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This is despite the fact that a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/FDALetter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2020 open letter<\/a>\u00a0from a coalition of pro-life groups to then-U.S. Food &amp; Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Stephen Hahn noted that the FDA\u2019s own adverse reporting system says the \u201cabortion pill has resulted in over 4,000 reported adverse events since 2000, including 24 maternal deaths. Adverse events are notoriously underreported to the FDA, and as of 2016, the FDA only requires abortion pill manufacturers to report maternal deaths.\u201d A recent Charlotte Lozier Institute study\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/emergency-rooms-mislabeled-thousands-of-abortion-pill-complications-as-miscarriage-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">also found<\/a>\u00a0that most emergency room visits stemming from abortion pill complications are misattributed to miscarriages, further making the pills appear \u201csafer\u201d than they really are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cA November 2021\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/23333928211053965\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0by Charlotte Lozier Institute scholars appeared in the peer-reviewed journal\u00a0<em>Health Services Research and Managerial Epidemiology<\/em>,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/mainstream-media-understate-dangers-of-chemical-abortion-drugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writes<\/a>\u00a0Catholic University of America research associate Michael New. \u201cThey analyzed state Medicaid data of over 400,000 abortions from 17 states that fund elective abortions through their Medicaid programs. They found that the rate of abortion-pill-related emergency-room visits increased over 500 percent from 2002 through 2015. The rate of emergency-room visits for surgical abortions also increased during the same time period, but by a much smaller margin.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Whether the issue will be resolved nationally remains to be seen. President Donald Trump has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/trump-restores-mexico-city-policy-enforces-hyde-amendment-to-limit-govt-abortion-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">taken a number of pro-life actions<\/a>\u00a0since returning to office, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/trump-says-he-wont-enforce-federal-law-banning-distribution-of-abortion-pills-by-mail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0on the campaign trail that he would not enforce federal law prohibiting abortion pills from being dispensed by mail. Health &amp; Human Services Secretary Robert F.
