Men are raising awareness that they can, and should, have a voice on abortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WASHINGTON\u2014Carlos Lamoutte and GianLuca Pasquotto listened intently as Vice President JD Vance spoke to a crowd of tens of thousands gathered on the National Mall on Jan. 24 for the 52nd National March for Life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seniors at Jesuit High School, an all-boys Catholic school in Tampa, Florida, traveled to the nation\u2019s capital with more than 45 fellow members of the school\u2019s pro-life club, which began sending students to the March for Life more than a decade ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they were just a fraction of the thousands of young men from elementary schools, high schools, colleges, and seminaries across the country gathered in the nation\u2019s capital to make their voices heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those young men were joined by little boys walking hand-in-hand with their fathers and mothers and older men bearing signs that said things such as, \u201cAbortion is Failed Manhood\u201d and \u201cMen Regret Lost Fatherhood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their presence at the march, along with male leaders such as Vance, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), exemplified their determination to hold fast to their beliefs. President Donald Trump also shared a video message: \u201cWe will again stand proudly for families and for life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryder Wittman, 20, a senior at Colorado Christian University, attended the march. \u201cI think a lot of guys aren\u2019t even aware that they can be part of this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said his friends and peers have told him, \u201c’Oh, I didn\u2019t know I could have an opinion about that. I didn\u2019t know there was anything I could do. I thought that was a female thing.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wittman said that while volunteering at a pregnancy center in Denver, he comes face to face with young men who feel voiceless over an unplanned pregnancy, even when their girlfriends want them to speak up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA lot of guys come in and they\u2019re my age, you know, they\u2019re 19, 20, 21, and, you know, the mentality they\u2019re told is \u2018I can\u2019t have an opinion on this,\u2019\u201d he told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd their girlfriends, they\u2019ll be looking at them saying, \u2018Hey, lead me in this. Tell me what we should do.\u2019 So, the big thing for me is how do we challenge that. How do we combat the idea that men don\u2019t have a say here?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students for Life\u2019s Kristen Cooper, 21, spoke with The Epoch Times and also emphasized the need for both men and women to be involved.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cThe pro-life movement is built on families, and that requires both men and women, and we are so happy to have men standing up for our movement,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other side are the young men Wittman has encountered in his volunteer work: young men who don\u2019t want to be ignored and want to stop their girlfriends from aborting their children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over and over again, he said, he sees dads who say, \u201cHey, I don\u2019t really want to go this way, but I don\u2019t feel like I can have an opinion here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really heartbreaking and tragic to witness,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several pro-life groups have recognized that push to silence men on the issue and have even seen it arise in the pro-life movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSometimes the pro-life movement risks falling into this mistake, that it\u2019s just a women\u2019s movement,\u201d Priests for Life National Director Frank Pavone told The Epoch Times. \u201cSometimes you\u2018ll see these events being arranged, and they say, \u2018Oh, let\u2019s just let the women speak. We\u2019ll only let the women speak.\u2019 That\u2019s a big mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOf course, we want the voices of the women to be loud and clear. We bring forward the voices of the women in our \u2018Silent No More\u2019 campaign, those who have had abortions. But even there, the men are involved as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Janet Morana is Priests for Life\u2019s Executive Director and cofounder<\/a> of\u00a0 the Silent No More Awareness Campaign.\u00a0 Morana and Pavone said that making abortion exclusively a women\u2019s issue helps perpetuate abortion by making women feel alone in their choice.<\/p>\n\n\n

Men need to resume the role of protector, they said, praising the number of young men they see becoming active in the pro-life movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so beautiful to see because if we had more guys like that, back when Norma McCorvey was around, and Roe v. Wade started, I don\u2019t think we’d be where we are,\u201d Morana told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s strong men … and boys growing up who will defend their women and put them up on a pedestal like they belong and really celebrate motherhood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Post-Roe Generation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The young men who spoke to The Epoch Times said they see the need for a permanent change in the nation\u2019s culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe our generation has a great responsibility to redeem our culture of death and transform it into a culture of life,\u201d Lamoutte wrote in an email before the march. \u201cNow that Roe v. Wade has been overturned, it\u2019s time to focus on our culture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs St. John Paul II constantly proclaimed, culture is more important than politics and economics when it comes to true and lasting change in our society,\u201d he said. \u201cI think that\u2019s what our post-Roe generation is called to above all else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both of Lamoutte\u2019s parents are obstetrician-gynecologists. Having two doctors as parents\u2014as well as his dad\u2019s volunteer work for an abortion reversal hotline\u2014was formative as he heard of crisis pregnancies and women wanting to reverse first-trimester abortions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHaving such a close experience with these patients gave me a different perspective, which caused me to become very passionate about the pro-life cause and inspired me to stand up for these women and their children,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n

Testimonials also brought Pasquotto fully into the pro-life movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He told The Epoch Times via email that he initially joined Tampa Jesuit\u2019s pro-life club because his brother had been a member for four years and had participated in three March for Life trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the turning point in his conviction occurred during his first March for Life when he heard the \u201cSilent No More\u201d testimonies of women who had abortions and were now speaking out about their remorse and continued pain and suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI realized that this was not a mere political or even social issue,\u201d he said. \u201cAbortion is a moral dilemma that directly affects the next generation of Americans. I honestly just want my children to grow up in a world that promotes life, not ends it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Survivors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not only does abortion affect the next generation, it has directly impacted every generation since Roe v. Wade, Pavone said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those generations are connected by the fact that they are survivors, he said. While their own parents may not have considered aborting them, they were conceived, carried, and born in a society that did not offer them protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That awareness of being a survivor, he said, should fuel people to speak up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn speaking for the unborn, you are speaking up also for yourselves,\u201d he told The Epoch Times. \u201dIf you were not protected in the womb, you\u2019re speaking for yourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaker Johnson recognized that defining moment as well, telling the crowd of marchers about how he was the product of an unplanned pregnancy and born just one year before Roe v. Wade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am so eternally grateful that my mom and dad ignored all the people who told them to just take care of that problem, and they chose to embrace life and to have me, the first of their four children,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a simple fact, a very simple fact, that if they had not done that, then I would not be here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson said he often wonders \u201cwho else we have missed,\u201d and what those individuals might have contributed to the world if they had been given the opportunity to be born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson told the March for Life crowd that the House of Representatives had a day earlier passed<\/a> the Born Alive Survivors Protection Act, which requires that infants born during botched abortions receive the same level of life-saving care that would be given to any other newborn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a matter of basic humanity to ensure that a child who survives an abortion attempt should be cared for as he or she is lying on the table gasping for breath,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He praised the activists for their collective efforts over the more than 50 years since Roe v. Wade was decided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTogether, we are rebuilding a culture of life,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students of Tampa Jesuit High School also received words of encouragement from their Florida state senator, Jay Collins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour courage and dedication to protecting the unborn show the very best of what our community stands for\u2013faith, service, and standing strong for what\u2019s right,\u201d he said when The Epoch Times asked him about their participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs you make your voices heard, know that your actions matter, and you\u2019re part of a movement that can change hearts and save lives. Stay bold, stay focused, and keep fighting the good fight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Culture of Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Although the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in June 2022, and other legislative victories have been won, those who spoke to The Epoch Times before and during the March said the fight is not over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe job is not done,\u201d said Pasquotto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlthough a monumental feat, the overturning of Roe v. Wade does not ban abortion through and through,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA much more difficult task is at hand: getting abortion at any stage of the pregnancy banned in each state. In fact, now more than ever, it is crucial for men to step up because there are still tens of millions of people in need of the truth, in need of our prayers, and in need of action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of his schoolmates continue to pray in front of an abortion clinic every Friday as well as every year on their trip to the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They pray \u201cfor all women who are scared, confused, and alone,\u201d and for all of the babies who don\u2019t have someone to stand up for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also pray for men faced with a crisis pregnancy, who may not know how to support their girlfriends, wives, sisters, or daughters at that difficult time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lamoutte added that making the government aware of the nation\u2019s enduring pro-life movement is crucial to continuing to build a culture of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt speaks to our nation as a whole to let them know that our movement isn\u2019t going anywhere and will continue to fight for the cause of life and the ultimate end to abortion,\u201d he said of the March of Life.<\/p>\n\n\n

Setbacks and Challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The pro-life movement has had its setbacks, both collective and individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Post-Roe, several states passed legislation to protect abortion access. Meanwhile, the students, although surrounded by like-minded communities and families, said they have faced prejudice in person and on the internet for their beliefs. In some instances, they\u2019ve lost friends along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young people are coming up in the movement who seek to change some deep-rooted problems that, they say, continue to hold it back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One change Wittman believes is necessary is improved communication between the pro-life movement\u2019s different factions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While some groups, like Students for Life, focus on defunding Planned Parenthood, other groups have other priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some pro-life groups praised DeSantis for signing Florida\u2019s heartbeat legislation, which outlaws abortion after six weeks gestation. Others\u2014such as the pro-life abolitionist movement\u2014refuse to see legislation with any abortion concessions as a sign of progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we get to those decisive moments, our lack of consensus hurts us,\u201d Wittman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the challenges, this younger generation said they remain hopeful for the future, with the March for Life serving as an annual renewal of that hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI truly believe there is a younger generation that is standing up for the cause of life and already in the works of transforming our culture into one of life,\u201d Lamoutte said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSeeing the many young people on this March and activities surrounding it year after year continues to inspire me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
