The study examined responses from 1,600 women in the United Kingdom (UK) who had undergone a chemical abortion, with over 90% of respondents ranking their pain at least a 4 out of 10; about half said the pain was worse than they had expected. Around 40% ranked their pain between an 8 and a 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Women who responded to the survey did not hold back about their experiences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cPain was so much stronger than period pain, it was like having contractions in labour. I\u2019ve given birth three times and &nbsp; &nbsp;the pain really wasn\u2019t too much different from that pain, the cramping contraction pain.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cLike someone squeezing my stomach muscles, like my insides were being twisted.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe pain was intense and constant, in my lower back. It hurt so much that it made  me throw up several times. I felt shaky and faint at points. After the pregnancy passed it became a lot easier.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe pain was really a lot worse than I expected, perhaps because it was compared to bad period pain and my periods have always been fairly pain-free.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201c[I wish I had been told] how bad the pain actually would be not just \u2018cramps\u2019 cause it\u2019s more than just cramps\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cPain was so severe, and yet everything I read or heard, and what little there was about the pain on the internet was it was slight cramping like a bad period\u2026 well it couldn\u2019t be further from the truth\u2026 . The amount of pain you could go through is completely played down \u2026 I understand they probably don\u2019t want to scare many women, but I\u2019d rather know how bad the pain can get.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIf I had known it was basically like inducing labour, I would not have taken the medical abortion route.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cFrom what was on the website and what I was told I had no indication it could be like that [so painful].\u2026 [Being transparent] might put some women off from abortion, however, I feel that patients have a right to fully understand the risks and benefits. This should be made absolutely transparent; shared and informed decision making is essential.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Some women did say the pain wasn\u2019t as bad as they thought it would be, but the authors of the study urged abortionists to be more realistic about what chemical abortions are like. \u201cWhile many compared it to other reproductive pain, some found comparisons to period pain inaccurate and misleading,\u201d the study concluded. \u201cMany felt unprepared for pain\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">While this study focused on the United Kingdom, it\u2019s an issue that affects the United States as well. Planned Parenthood, the nation\u2019s largest abortion chain,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/abortion\/the-abortion-pill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">downplays the reality<\/a>&nbsp;of chemical abortions on its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/abortion\/the-abortion-pill\/what-can-i-expect-after-i-take-the-abortion-pill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>, merely reporting that women will feel \u201ctired and crampy\u201d and that it\u2019s \u201ckind of like having a really heavy, crampy period.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Women who have actually undergone chemical abortions, as this study found, beg to differ.
