Secretary of Health and Human Services nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pledged to several<\/a> Republican<\/a> senators<\/a> this week to reinstate and uphold the pro-life policies enacted by President Donald Trump\u2019s first administration if he is confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to\u00a0Sen. Josh Hawley<\/a>, Kennedy plans to facilitate the return of\u00a0popular Trump-era protections<\/a>\u00a0like a prohibition on taxpayer-funded abortions at home and abroad and a gag rule\u00a0requiring<\/a>\u00a0institutions that receive Title X funding, like Planned Parenthood, to separate their medical care from their abortion activities. Kennedy also reportedly promised that the conscience protections the Biden administration\u00a0worked overtime to undo<\/a>\u00a0would be restored. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the most important commitment Kennedy made to Hawley is that \u201call of his deputies at HHS would be prolife.\u201d As Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins noted in the pages of The Federalist earlier this month<\/a>, \u201cappointing pro-life personnel [to HHS] is critical\u201d to Trump\u2019s \u201cup to the states\u201d agenda<\/a> because it is the only way to ensure \u201cTrump\u2019s goal of less federal government engagement with abortion\u201d isn\u2019t stonewalled by pro-abortion bureaucrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Trump nominated Kennedy to head the federal health authority, several pro-life<\/a> organizations signaled hesitation. As a 2024 presidential candidate, Kennedy expressed support<\/a> for abortion through all nine months of pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUltimately, I don\u2019t trust government to have jurisdiction over people\u2019s bodies,\u201d Kennedy said. \u201cI think we need to leave it to the woman, her pastor, and to, you know, her spiritual advisors or advisor or physician, whatever, to make those decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After learning that women selectively \u201cabort healthy, viable late-term fetuses,\u201d Kennedy later walked back<\/a> his position to endorsing abortion until \u201cthe baby is viable outside the womb,\u201d around 22 weeks gestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Republicans are right to be wary of how Kennedy\u2019s personal beliefs on baby-killing could square with his potential duties as health secretary \u2014 especially since those beliefs are still at odds with Americans\u2019 opposition to butchering babies beyond 15 weeks<\/a>. After all, the department Kennedy could be confirmed to lead is the top federal authority when it comes to abortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if Trump\u2019s example taught Americans anything, it\u2019s that administration leaders\u2019 personal feelings about abortion don\u2019t necessarily need to align with the fight to protect life; only their actions do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Kennedy to make good on the GOP\u2019s confidence that he will be confirmed<\/a>, he must stick to his guns on reimplementing the Mexico City policy (a ban on funneling millions<\/a> of American taxpayers\u2019 dollars to organizations that perform or encourage abortions) and every other promise he made in his rounds on Capitol Hill. If he is wise and truly believes Americans should be freed from the clutches of Big Pharma, as he\u2019s proclaimed so many times in recent months, RFK Jr. will also take steps to limit the largely deregulated distribution of dangerous abortion pills<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s first-term overhaul of HHS abortion policy was\u00a0wildly successful<\/a>, earning him the title of the \u201cmost pro-life president.\u201d The incoming president\u2019s second-term success when it comes to health care policy hinges on Kennedy making good on his promises to protect life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
