{"id":31889,"date":"2024-07-23T17:17:33","date_gmt":"2024-07-23T17:17:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/?p=31889"},"modified":"2024-07-23T17:17:34","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T17:17:34","slug":"gop-establishment-knows-it-cant-do-without-us-evangelical-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/gop-establishment-knows-it-cant-do-without-us-evangelical-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"GOP Establishment Knows It &#8216;Can&#8217;t Do Without Us&#8217;:  Evangelical Leader"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong><em>By:  Ben Johnson, originally published <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonstand.com\/news\/gop-establishment-knows-it-cant-do-without-us-evangelical-leader\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">July 23, 2024, The Washington Stand<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If the Democratic plan to change presidential candidates bolsters candidates in competitive races, the powers behind the Republican Party\u2019s decision to water down its historic commitment to protect unborn babies from abortion and defend religious liberty \u201cwill be panicking\u201d this fall and realize \u201cthey need us around,\u201d says a leading evangelical figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Republican National Convention formally adopted a dramatically hollowed-out platform last Monday in a controversial process that saw GOP figures foist the new language on party pro-life stalwarts without debate or dissent. That omission and others are important, because \u201chistory shows that the platforms chart the path that the party itself is ultimately going to take,\u201d said \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/tonyperkins.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington Watch<\/a>\u201d guest host and former Congressman Jody Hice\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zbZrk5UZAhc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">last Friday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI\u2019ve been saying for a year we\u2019re not going to run against Biden. It\u2019s more and more evident that we\u2019re not going to run against Biden,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rumble.com\/v57md64-chad-connelly-offers-a-way-forward-on-the-gop-platform.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0Chad Connelly,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/faithwins.org\/chad-connelly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CEO<\/a>\u00a0of Faith Wins on \u201cWashington Watch\u201d Friday, two days before Biden relinquished his status as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. The unpopular Biden\u2019s departure may give a boost, not only to the Democrats\u2019 presidential prospects, but to Democrats in swing states who otherwise would have been brought down by Biden\u2019s drag on the ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThey\u2019re going to need us around in September. They\u2019re going to be panicking,\u201d Connelly told Hice. \u201cThey\u2019re going to need us again, and they\u2019re going to need us in the House and Senate races, the down-ticket races. Some of these people who\u2019ve pushed this for so many years, they\u2019re going to be the very ones coming back saying, \u2018Why didn\u2019t you help us? Or why don\u2019t you help us?\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Connelly complained about the process of the Republican National Convention forcing a change in the party\u2019s popular pro-life plank, saying, \u201cWe were steamrolled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The platform also lowered its specific commitments on multiple issues of interest to grassroots conservatives. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prod-cdn-static.gop.com\/media\/documents\/DRAFT_12_FINAL%5B1%5D-ben_1468872234.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2016 Republican Party platform<\/a>\u00a0featured 16 references to God; the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/2024-republican-party-platform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 GOP platform<\/a>\u00a0mentions God only twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThat\u2019s not necessarily concerning in itself, especially because of the word count cut,\u201d Arielle Del Turco, director of the Center for Religious Liberty at Family Research Council,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zbZrk5UZAhc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0Hice later in the show. But the big difference comes in how the platforms discuss God. \u201cThe 2024 platform, for example, mentions God talking about what Republicans will do with God\u2019s good grace. And that\u2019s important. We need God\u2019s grace to do everything that the Lord has given us to accomplish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThat\u2019s great,\u201d said Del Turco. \u201cHowever, we want a little bit more than that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe want to see God put in a place of honor and reverence as foundational to our party\u2019s values and our country\u2019s values. And ultimately, we want to see God recognized as the Creator in our platform and recognized as the source of our rights,\u201d said Del Turco. \u201cThese ideas need to keep us rooted, whether [they are] in the platform or not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe religious freedom language is pretty good,\u201d Del Turco assessed. The 2024 platform on religious liberty states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Republicans Will Defend Religious Liberty<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We are the defenders of the First Amendment Right to Religious Liberty. It protects the Right not only to Worship according to the dictates of Conscience, but also to act in accordance with those Beliefs, not just in places of Worship, but in everyday life. Our ranks include men and women from every Faith and Tradition, and we respect the Right of every American to follow his or her deeply held Beliefs. To protect Religious Liberty, Republicans support a new Federal Task Force on Fighting Anti-Christian Bias that will investigate all forms of illegal discrimination, harassment, and persecution against Christians in America. \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Freedom to Pray<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Republicans will champion the First Amendment Right to Pray and Read the Bible in school, and stand up to those who violate the Religious Freedoms of American students.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Del Turco noted that the proposal for a federal task force to fight anti-Christian bias is \u201csomething we\u2019ve never seen before in our country\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSadly, the 2024 platform doesn\u2019t mention international religious freedom at all,\u201d Del Turco revealed. \u201cFrankly, it\u2019s a little surprising to see that it\u2019s not mentioned in the current platform, especially because the Trump administration was such a great advocate for religious freedom around the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The present platform is also missing the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.frc.org\/EF\/EF17A56.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">First Amendment Defense Act<\/a>\u00a0(FADA), a bill to prevent government from punishing Christians who hold to traditional views of marriage and sexuality. It also lacks any mention of posting the Ten Commandments in public schools, and could have had less muted criticism of the Biden administration\u2019s weaponization of government against pro-life advocates and other traditional Christians, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Connelly blamed the platform changes on moderate-to-liberal Republicans, who had long desired to move the party away from its grassroots and solidify its appeal to Wall Street and Silicon Valley tycoons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI think this has always been about the consultants. I don\u2019t think this has been about President Trump, as much as I would think he would not get down in the weeds this much that they actually worked so hard to keep pro-lifers off\u201d balance, said Connelly. \u201cI think he gave some basic directives and consultants went overboard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cEver since I went to my first [Republican National Convention] in 2004,\u201d consultants have \u201cbeen trying to water down the platform,\u201d revealed Connelly. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s anything new.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The GOP consultant class \u201cthought they could avoid abortion,\u201d said Connelly. \u201cDo you know there were anti-Republican\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/07\/16\/democrats-hit-rnc-on-abortion-unions-trump-horrible-city-comment\/74423554007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">billboards<\/a>\u00a0in Milwaukee talking about abortion?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Former RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel repeatedly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonstand.com\/news\/rnc-chair-tells-republicans-we-can-win-on-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">encouraged<\/a>\u00a0Republican candidates to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonstand.com\/commentary\/rnc-chair-if-republicans-want-to-win-we-cant-be-silent-on-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">speak out on abortion<\/a>, especially to highlight Democratic extremism. \u201cAnd let\u2019s face it, most of the people on our side don\u2019t know how to talk about our principles,\u201d said Connelly. \u201cYou could tell some of the speakers probably struggled with it. They don\u2019t have their messaging right, either. The Left is not going to let us ignore the life issue and the abortion issue. We should stand strong on our principles and talk about them with conviction \u2014 always.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But, he said, this will come back to haunt them. \u201cThey\u2019ve not thought through this very well, these brilliant consultants,\u201d Connelly continued, \u201cbecause the more granular the election, the more they need evangelicals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Kamala Harris reportedly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/2024-election\/2024\/07\/22\/report-kamala-harris-secures-support-among-enough-delegates-to-become-democrat-nominee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">secured the majority<\/a>\u00a0of delegates needed for the Democratic Party\u2019s presidential nomination just over 24 hours after Biden left the race. Harris, who has a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/biden-drops-out-race-endorses-kamala-harris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long history<\/a>\u00a0of working with Planned Parenthood and prosecuting pro-life whistleblowers, emphasized abortion in her first speech after Biden\u2019s departure from the race on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Connelly reminded listeners that America is suffering, not from \u201cBiden policies\u201d but \u201cprogressive, Democrat policies,\u201d which will endure after the figure at the top of the party changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This proves evangelicals must work even harder to win back influence in the Republican Party, he said. \u201cI sent an email to my whole list of pastors throughout the country and said, \u2018This just proves to me we need to redouble our efforts. If we\u2019ve registered two million new Christians in the last two or three cycles, we need to register 10 million. Because, let\u2019s face it, there\u2019s not a healthy fear of God among those consultants who would push this kind of thing at the state level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The party\u2019s vice presidential nominee, Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), seemingly alluded to the power of the pro-life, Christian vote. \u201cThere has been a lot of rumbling in the past few weeks that the Republican Party of now and the Republican Party of the future is not going to be a place that\u2019s welcoming to social conservatives. And really, from the bottom of my heart, I want to say that is not true. Social conservatives have a seat at this table, and they always will, so long as I have any influence in this party \u2014 and President Trump, I know, agrees,\u201d Senator Vance\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/jd-vance-says-conservative-christians-have-a-seat-at-the-table.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0the Faith &amp; Freedom Coalition last Thursday, one day after accepting the Republican Party\u2019s vice presidential nomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Vance asked pro-life advocates to give former President Trump \u201cgrace\u201d and \u201ctrust,\u201d advising an incremental strategy.
