A top Republican vice presidential contender is following former President Donald Trump\u2019s lead and backing off pro-life protections and principles. On Sunday, Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) was\u00a0asked<\/a>\u00a0by Kristen Welker on NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press\u201d about the Heritage Foundation\u2019s proposed Project 2025, a conservative blueprint for a second Trump term. Welker noted that one of the Project 2025 agenda items is \u201creversing approval of the abortion pill mifepristone, but Donald Trump says he supports access to that pill, actually.\u201d She asked Vance, a Catholic, if he also supports \u201caccess to abortion medication,\u201d and the senator replied that he does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn the question of the abortion pill, what so many of us have said is that \u2026 the Supreme Court made a decision saying that the American people should have access to that medication, Donald Trump has supported that opinion, I support that opinion,\u201d Vance stated. \u201cI think it\u2019s important to say that we actually have to have an important conversation in this country about what our abortion policy should be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDonald Trump is the pragmatic leader here, he\u2019s saying most abortion policy\u2019s going to be decided by the states,\u201d the senator continued. Vance went on to claim that the \u201cTrump and Republican approach to this issue\u201d is to make having and raising children and providing for a family more affordable. \u201cMeanwhile, Joe Biden wants taxpayer-funded abortion up to birth,\u201d he noted. \u201cDemocrats \u2014 they frame Democrats as being reasonable and pragmatic, when in reality, Republicans are the ones trying to find some common ground here.\u201d Welker asked, \u201cJust to be clear, you support mifepristone being accessible?\u201d Vance responded, \u201cYes, Kristen, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary Szoch, director of the Center for Human Dignity at Family Research Council, told The Washington Stand, \u201cEvery practicing Catholic knows \u2026 we must protect, defend, and cherish the gift of life. The call to love our neighbor and rescue those who are being led to slaughter begins at the moment of fertilization.\u201d She added, \u201cA recognition of this must be at the heart of all public policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance, who is reportedly on Trump\u2019s shortlist for vice president, was asked if he had been offered the role yet. He said that he has not but would let media know if he were to get the call. According to Polymarket analysis, Vance\u2019s statements on mifepristone\u00a0increased<\/a>\u00a0his chances of being picked as Trump\u2019s VP by 300%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mifepristone is known as the abortion drug. While it is commonly used with misoprostol, mifepristone actually\u00a0ends<\/a>\u00a0pregnancy, blocking the chemical action of the hormone progesterone and leaving the unborn child to die in the womb. Misoprostol has numerous other uses, including treating a miscarriage, and does not end a pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another VP contender, Vance\u2019s Senate colleague and fellow Catholic Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), also\u00a0backed away<\/a>\u00a0from pro-life principles this week. Speaking to CNN\u2019s Dana Bash on Sunday, Rubio said that the Republican Party platform should \u201creflect our nominee,\u201d instead of the pro-life principles championed by the GOP for decades. He added that Republicans \u201ccouldn\u2019t pass\u201d a pro-life constitutional amendment outlawing abortion \u201ceven if we wanted to\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Trump\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0his intention to leave abortion policy to individual states, drawing criticism from pro-life leaders. \u201cThe states will determine by vote or legislation \u2014 or perhaps both \u2014 and whatever they decide must be the law of the land,\u201d the former president said in a video. \u201cMany states will be different, many will have a different number of weeks, or some will have more conservative [respect for life] than others.\u201d Although Trump has\u00a0touted<\/a>\u00a0his first term\u2019s pro-life record and has repeatedly expressed support for pro-life Americans, numerous Republicans have followed his lead and begun backing away from their party\u2019s long-held pro-life position, culminating on Monday with the new GOP platform including\u00a0a vastly watered down agenda<\/a>\u00a0for protecting the unborn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
