Get the facts."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong><em>By:  Carole Novielli, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/later-abortions-rare-portrayed-facts\/?utm_campaign=lan_blast&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsmi=295150623&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_qdqL3lbEAhCysFsi01bukpJeLCVXy3w5XiAnEyceAiE2ejA_bhGRm4f6mUOHp2a0z0S0s6jwSyhWN4idww1PzojVl1mEhKlxNJNLlizHkGDBRzZs&amp;utm_source=housefile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Live Action News, originally published on February 21, 2024<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Later abortions committed in 2023 are estimated to reach over 123,000 \u2014 which is more than the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.infoplease.com\/us\/cities\/us-cities-population-over-100000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">individual populations<\/a>&nbsp;of many U.S. cities like Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Green Bay, Wisconsin; or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmingtonde.gov\/about-us\/about-the-city-of-wilmington\/population-demographics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wilmington, Delaware<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The 123,318 figure is extrapolated from estimated monthly numbers published by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-millions-planned-parenthood-funding-hidden\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guttm<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-millions-planned-parenthood-funding-hidden\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acher Institute<\/a>&nbsp;(a former Planned Parenthood \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/how-independent-is-guttmacher-from-planned-parenthood\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">special affiliate<\/a>\u201d), multiplied by previously reported gestational percentages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Traditionally, abortion data has been compiled by both the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-millions-planned-parenthood-funding-hidden\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guttmacher Institute<\/a>&nbsp;and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This data is reviewed below. Live Action News has previously&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/understanding-abortion-reporting-numbers\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a>&nbsp;some of the reasons for the variation in data from both reporting agencies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The CDC\u2019s overall abortion numbers are generally much lower than numbers released by the Guttmacher Institute. The CDC uses data from states, and since not every state requires abortion reporting \u2014 and those that do differ in what information is collected \u2014 abortions by trimester (gestational age) will vary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Guttmacher gathers its figures from surveys, which it claims it sends directly to all known abortion facilities, categorized by type. Despite more comprehensive figures, Guttmacher generally neglects to break down reported abortion data beyond 21 weeks of pregnancy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HIGHLIGHTS\/SUMMARY<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Abortions committed at 13 weeks and up estimated to be 108,000 (2020).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Abortions committed at or after 15 weeks: 6.3%-7.4% or between 58,600-68,800 (2020).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Abortions committed at or after 16 weeks: estimated 5.4% or 50,000 (2020).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Abortions committed at or after 21 weeks over are an estimated 12,000 (2020).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">However, estimated abortion totals for 2023 may be much higher, with 123,318 later abortions estimated to be committed into the second and third trimesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LATEST REPORTED DATA MAY INDICATE AN INCREASE IN ABORTIONS<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-data-cdc-increase-2021\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2021<\/a>, the CDC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recorded<\/a>&nbsp;625,978 total abortions reported nationally from 48 reporting areas. Currently, not all states report abortion statistics to the CDC, and therefore, there are large disparities in abortion data state by state. Some require no reporting whatsoever, and others collect a variety of data on age, race, gender, gestation, complications, and other categories. Therefore, Guttmacher\u2019s overall numbers tend to be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/understanding-abortion-reporting-numbers\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more comprehensive<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/article\/2022\/06\/long-term-decline-us-abortions-reverses-showing-rising-need-abortion-supreme-court\">2020<\/a>, before&nbsp;<em>Roe<\/em>&nbsp;was overturned, the Guttmacher Institute&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-abortion-spike-2020-pregnancies\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\">recorded<\/a>&nbsp;930,160 abortions committed nationally \u2014 approximately 2,548 babies killed daily in the U.S. by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortionprocedures.com\/?__hstc=61024563.a4566b8629108d768ebc8d9d409ce865.1708638705701.1708638705701.1708638705701.1&amp;__hssc=61024563.2.1708638705702&amp;__hsfp=3828489826\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abortion<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 106 per hour, 1.8 per minute, and one every 35 seconds. However, while published totals are not yet available for 2021-2022, Live Action News has&nbsp;<em>estimated<\/em>&nbsp;those years at 900,000 each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In addition, monthly abortion estimates published by Guttmacher indicate that over&nbsp;<em>one million<\/em>&nbsp;abortions may have been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/unfathomable-abortions-estimated-since-roe\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">committed<\/a>&nbsp;in 2023. If that one million figure holds true when actual abortion numbers are published, that would mean that nearly 2,900 preborn babies are potentially slaughtered by abortion every day \u2014 nearly 121 every hour, and one every 30 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>FIRST TRIMESTER ABORTIONS<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cFor 2021, among the&nbsp;<em>41 areas<\/em>&nbsp;that reported&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w#T10_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gestational age<\/a>&nbsp;at the time of abortion, 80.8% of abortions were performed at \u22649 weeks\u2019 gestation, and 93.5% were performed at \u226413 weeks\u2019 gestation,\u201d the CDC wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Likewise, Guttmacher data indicates that approximately 90% of abortions are committed in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ABORTIONS AT 13\/14 WEEKS AND LATER<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>CDC:&nbsp;<\/strong>In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-data-cdc-increase-2021\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2021<\/a>, CDC data showed that fewer abortions were committed at 14\u201320 weeks\u2019 gestation. In the table below, which consists of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w#T10_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported abortions by gestation<\/a>, the government agency recorded a total of 476,937 abortions reported by gestation in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-data-cdc-increase-2021\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2021<\/a>. The CDC also recorded 31,106 later abortions at&nbsp;<em>14 weeks or greater<\/em>, indicating that approximately 6.5% of reported abortions by gestation were committed at&nbsp;<em>14 weeks or later<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"623\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Abortion-Data.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Abortion-Data.jpg 623w, https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Abortion-Data-300x159.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"623\" height=\"736\" src=\"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Fetus-alive.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Fetus-alive.jpg 623w, https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Fetus-alive-254x300.jpg 254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Guttmacher Institute:<\/strong>&nbsp;In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-abortion-spike-2020-pregnancies\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\">June of 2022<\/a>, Guttmacher reported a total of 930,160 abortions in the U.S. for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/article\/2022\/06\/long-term-decline-us-abortions-reverses-showing-rising-need-abortion-supreme-court\">2020<\/a>. However, they did not update the percentages of abortion by gestation in that report; therefore, Live Action News is using percentages from Guttmacher\u2019s graph below, from 2016, to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/100k-children-aborted-after-first-trimester-year\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">estimate<\/a>&nbsp;later abortions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In 2020, Live Action News estimates that the number of later abortions (13 weeks and up) has likely reached over 108,000 (108,828) annually, with nearly 12,100 committed at or past 21 weeks. A breakdown by gestation is below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">8 weeks or fewer (65.4%) \u2013 608,324 abortions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">9-10 weeks (14.7%) \u2013 136,733 abortions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">11-12 weeks (8.2%) \u2013 76,273 abortions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">13-15 weeks (6.3%) \u2013 58,600 abortions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">16-20 weeks (4.1%) \u2013 38,136 abortions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">At or greater than 21 weeks (1.3%) \u2013 12,092 abortions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"603\" height=\"664\" src=\"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Guttmacher-Stats.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Guttmacher-Stats.jpg 603w, https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Guttmacher-Stats-272x300.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 603px) 100vw, 603px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>15 WEEKS AND LATER<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-data-cdc-increase-2021\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2021<\/a>, CDC data did not specifically break down later abortions at 15 weeks. However, Live Action News&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/late-abortions-kill-tens-thousands-year\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previously<\/a>&nbsp;documented that in August of 2021, a review of CDC data by Guttmacher had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/article\/2021\/08\/mississippi-attacking-roe-v-wade-head-consequences-could-be-severe\">estimated<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cthat&nbsp;<em>between 6.3% and 7.4%<\/em>&nbsp;of all U.S. abortions are obtained&nbsp;<em>at or after 15 weeks of pregnancy<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Based on Guttmacher\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-abortion-spike-2020-pregnancies\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2020 published abortion totals<\/a>&nbsp;of 930,160 abortions, that would mean that&nbsp;<em>approximately&nbsp;<strong>58.6K to 68.8K<\/strong>&nbsp;abortions<\/em>&nbsp;are committed&nbsp;<strong>every year<\/strong>&nbsp;at or after 15 weeks, in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. This brings the&nbsp;<em>daily<\/em>&nbsp;national death toll for babies killed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/restricting-abortion-15-weeks-save-tens-thousands\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\">at or after 15 weeks<\/a>&nbsp;to between 160 and 189.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>16 WEEKS AND LATER<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>CDC:&nbsp;<\/strong>In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-data-cdc-increase-2021\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2021<\/a>, CDC data showed 18,362 later abortions out of 476,937 abortions reported by gestation in 2021 were committed at 16 weeks gestation or greater. This would indicate that approximately 4% (3.8%) of abortions&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w#T10_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported by gestation<\/a>&nbsp;were done at 16 weeks or more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Guttmacher Institute:&nbsp;<\/strong>Utilizing percentages by gestation published by Guttmacher in the 2016 graph above, Live Action News estimates that&nbsp;<em>approximatly 5.4% of abortions<\/em>&nbsp;are committed&nbsp;<em>at or after 16 weeks<\/em>. Using the total number of abortions reported in 2020 (930,160) this would translate to approximately&nbsp;<em>50,228 babies killed by abortion in that gestational range<\/em>. This brings the&nbsp;<em>daily<\/em>&nbsp;national death toll for babies killed at or after 16 weeks to&nbsp;<em>approximately 138 per day<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>21 WEEKS AND LATER<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Both the CDC and Guttmacher have acknowledged that abortions committed at 21 weeks or later represent 1% to 1.3% of all reported abortions \u2014 and this is no small number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Center for Disease Control (CDC):&nbsp;<\/strong>CDC\u2019s abortion data indicates that 4,070 preborn babies were recorded as being aborted at or past 21 weeks of pregnancy in 2021. However, if we apply the&nbsp;<em>1% stat<\/em>&nbsp;to the total number of abortions reported by CDC in 2021 (625,978), we can estimate that approximately 6,260 (estimated) abortions may have been committed at 21 weeks or greater in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-data-cdc-increase-2021\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2021<\/a>&nbsp;(CDC).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Guttmacher Institute:&nbsp;<\/strong>Using Guttmacher\u2019s 1.3% figure from 2016, we estimate that nearly&nbsp;<strong>12,100<\/strong>&nbsp;babies were aborted at 21 weeks gestation or later in 2020. This brings the&nbsp;<em>daily<\/em>&nbsp;national death toll for babies killed at or after 21 weeks or greater to&nbsp;<em>nearly 33 babies every single day<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014 more than the average Kindergarten classroom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Children&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/premature-baby-celebrates-first-birthday\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\">born prematurely<\/a>&nbsp;at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/youngest-preemie-world-21-weeks-going-home\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\">21 weeks<\/a>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/21-weeks-premature-baby-survive\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;to have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/premature-21-weeks-eliora-birthday\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\">survived<\/a>&nbsp;with medical assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ABORTIONS AT OR AFTER 24 WEEKS<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">No national reporting breaks down how many later abortions are committed at or after 24 weeks \u2014 because the abortion industry fights against any sort of required abortion reporting. In addition, some states which allow abortions into the later weeks of pregnancy and are home to the most notorious&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/third-trimester-abortion-any-reason\/&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=housefile&amp;utm_campaign=lan_blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">late-term abortion facilities<\/a>&nbsp;in the nation are not reporting data to CDC (since this reporting is voluntary).
