If Corky lived in a post-Issue One Ohio, he could be aborted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Advances in prenatal diagnosis now make it possible to detect handicap prior to birth. But does that technology exist to help improve the health outcomes of such children, or as identification tools in a \u201csearch and destroy\u201d mission to abort them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Denmark, for example, has reduced Down Syndrome not by curing the underlying defect, but by aborting people with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Various states\u2014including neighboring Indiana\u2014have banned abortion for eugenic purposes. The argument is simple: you don\u2019t address handicap by eliminating the handicapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pro-abortion forces in Ohio have fought for more than a decade to protect such lethal discrimination against the unborn in Ohio. Issue One would make aborting a child for reason of handicap (or any reason whatsoever), a \u201cright\u201d under the Ohio Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Don\u2019t let the pro-abortion forces say this should be a family\u2019s \u201cchoice.\u201d If that\u2019s true, why shouldn\u2019t a family be able to eliminate that handicapped member a minute after birth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dirty little secret is that many do: such newborns are neglected in nurseries, denied the kind of care they would otherwise receive for their condition because their parents or doctor decide their life is \u201cnot worth living.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Former Virginia Governor Ralph Northam let the cat out of the bag when he told a radio interview in 2019 that, \u201cThe infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be “Resuscitated\u201d if that\u2019s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians & mother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To give or deny treatment based not on medical efficacy, but \u201cwhat the mother and the family desired\u201d or because a child\u2019s life is characterized as \u201cnot worth living\u201d is lethal discrimination. It denies medical care to someone because they are handicapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or it says they can be aborted because they are handicapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Americans are proud of the \u201cAmericans with Disability Act\u201d (ADA). ADA has sought to mainstream handicapped persons into society. It recognizes that the measure of a society\u2019s humanity is how it treats its weakest, \u201cthe least of my brethren.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Issue One would say that aborting a baby before birth just because he suffers from a handicap is a protected \u201cright\u201d that should be guaranteed on \u201cprinciple.\u201d Do you think it\u2019s a \u201cright\u201d and \u201cprinciple\u201d to decide whether a child should live or die because he\u2019s sick?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
