There is a concerted effort from the abortion lobby and its allies in media to convince Americans that there is no such thing as late term abortion. It isn\u2019t true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just recently, Planned Parenthood President Alexis McGill<\/a> claimed that: \u201cLike Nessie and Bigfoot, the term \u2018late-term abortion\u2019 is completely made up. It\u2019s anti-abortion propaganda with no basis in medicine, intended to confuse people.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki<\/a> echoed that \u201cno one supports abortion up until birth,\u201d and then later defended this claim on her MSNBC show: \u201cThis claim that Democrats support abortion up until the moment of birth is entirely misleading,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the truth is that\u00a010,000 babies\u2019 lives are lost<\/a>\u00a0every year\u00a0to late-term abortions, the majority of which take place for elective reasons.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These denials of the harsh reality reveal one positive thing \u2014 the deniers at least recognize that support for limitless abortion is unpopular. One poll shows that 70 percent of Americans<\/a> believe that abortion should be limited at least after 12 to 15 weeks into pregnancy, and other polls demonstrate<\/a> the same consensus on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout my time as a leader in the pro-life movement, I have worked to educate pro-abortion rights leaders about the beauty of life and the truth about abortion so that we can overcome the differences dividing us.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Psaki\u2019s claim, that \u201cno one supports abortion up until birth,\u201d has also been roundly debunked by\u00a0the many members of\u00a0her\u00a0own\u00a0party who refuse to\u00a0name\u00a0a\u00a0single limit on abortion\u00a0they would support.<\/a>\u00a0This includes Sens. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) and\u00a0John\u00a0Fetterman (D-Pa.); former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams (D-Ga.);\u00a0and\u00a0former Reps. Beto O\u2019Rourke (D-Tex.) and Tim Ryan\u00a0(D-Ohio), among many\u00a0others.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a Virginia resident, I will never forget the day when our former Governor Ralph Northam<\/a> (D) admitted publicly that he believed it permissible, both as a physician and as governor, to allow survivors of botched abortions to be left to die even after they were born alive.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such heartlessness is not merely rhetorical.\u00a0That same year,\u00a0U.S. Senate\u00a0Democratic\u00a0leaders\u00a0killed a bill<\/a>\u00a0that would have required medical care for babies who\u00a0survive abortions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I could barely believe it then, and I also can\u2019t believe that today, seven states and Washington D.C.<\/a> have no limits on abortion whatsoever. The result of such policies was on display about a year ago when pro-life advocates discovered the mutilated remains of five fully formed babies, including possible victims of illegal partial birth abortions, originating from a Washington D.C. abortion clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some in Congress and the White House have also been fighting to pass the deceptively named \u201cWomen\u2019s Health Protection Act (WHPA),\u201d which would allow abortion on demand, up until birth, for any reason at any time. Supporters often claim that the WHPA\u2019s mention of \u201cviability\u201d constitutes a limit on late-term abortion. But \u201cviability\u201d can be, and in the past has been, interpreted to mean just about anything. According to the late-term abortionist Warren Hern,<\/a> \u201cthe viability of a fetus is determined not by gestational age but by a woman\u2019s willingness to carry it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of Planned Parenthood\u2019s chief medical officers,\u00a0Colleen\u00a0McNicholas,<\/a>\u00a0similarly\u00a0admitted during\u00a0sworn\u00a0testimony\u00a0before Congress\u00a0that \u201cthere\u00a0is no\u00a0particular gestational\u00a0age\u201d for viability. \u201cThere are some pregnancies in which the fetus will never be\u00a0viable,\u201d she added. \u201cMy practice includes (abortion) through the point of viability, and as we previously discussed, that could be at any point.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So late-term abortion is far from a myth. Statistically, it occurs dozens of times each day. This brings me enormous grief, especially since I have spent the past decade leading an organization that works and marches to ring in a new era where Psaki\u2019s words ring true \u2014 when \u201cno one supports abortion up until birth.\u201d Unfortunately, we are not there yet, even though a large majority of Americans<\/a> believe that second- and third-trimester abortions should be illegal.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 10,000 lives lost each year to late term abortions should compel even those who do not call themselves pro-life to join us as we work to end the violence and provide women and children with the resources, love and support they need to thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
