{"id":29345,"date":"2023-09-03T15:39:29","date_gmt":"2023-09-03T15:39:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/?p=29345"},"modified":"2024-03-01T18:26:56","modified_gmt":"2024-03-01T18:26:56","slug":"should-ohio-taxpayers-pay-for-abortions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cincinnatirighttolife.org\/should-ohio-taxpayers-pay-for-abortions\/","title":{"rendered":"Should Ohio Taxpayers Pay for Abortions?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The question is pretty straightforward: should <em>every <\/em>Ohio taxpayer, regardless of how he feels about abortion, have to pay for it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Yes or no?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Depending on your answer, that\u2019s how you should vote on Issue One November 7.\u00a0 Issue One amends Ohio\u2019s Constitution to legalize abortion-on-demand through nine months of pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But it just doesn\u2019t legalize abortion and stop there.\u00a0 It says explicitly that Ohio\u2019s official position is not to \u201cburden, penalize, \u2026 or discriminate against \u2026 an individual\u2019s \u2026 right\u201d to have an abortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">That means Ohio taxpayers <em>have<\/em> to pay for abortions for any reason under Medicaid.\u00a0 It also means that Ohio cannot exclude abortion from state health plans offered under Obamacare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The history of <em>Roe v. Wade <\/em>\u2013 which abortion proponents claim they are just \u201ccodifying\u201d \u2013 should teach us a lesson.\u00a0 Within two years of that 1973 decision, multiple federal courts had decided that the federal government had to pay for abortions under Medicaid because, if they didn\u2019t, they were \u201cdiscriminating\u201d against poor women.\u00a0 \u201cIf rich women can have abortions, poor women should be enabled to have them, too!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">That\u2019s why Congress first enacted the Hyde Amendment, cutting off taxpayer money to pay for abortions.&nbsp; It took a prolonged fight in Congress to make the Hyde Amendment law.&nbsp; Finally, in 1976, that happened.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But the pro-abortion camp did not give up.\u00a0 They went all the way to the Supreme Court to try to get the Hyde Amendment declared unconstitutional on the grounds it \u201cdiscriminated\u201d against poor women.\u00a0 It took until 1980 for the Supreme Court to uphold the Hyde Amendment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Passage of Issue One <em>will <\/em>force public funding of abortions in Ohio <em>for any reason whatsoever.\u00a0 <\/em>Issue One makes clear abortion is a \u201cright\u201d that needs no further justification.\u00a0 So, unlike the Hyde Amendment, which only funds abortion in cases where a woman is in danger of death or the pregnancy results from rape or incest, Ohio would have to pay for every abortion for any reason under Medicaid.\u00a0 The same is true of state Obamacare plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">People who oppose abortion believe abortion ends a human life.\u00a0 That\u2019s a serious matter.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t it basic justice to say that, in a society divided about abortion, it\u2019s not fair to expect people with such serious objections to abortion to have to support it through their taxes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But let\u2019s say you support abortion.\u00a0 Being for abortion and for public subsidy of abortion are two different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Let\u2019s think logically.\u00a0 People have all sorts of rights. People have a right to a free press.\u00a0 They have a right to free speech.\u00a0 They even have a right to bear arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Does that mean Ohio has a duty to buy everybody who wants but can\u2019t afford one a subscription to <em>The Plain Dealer <\/em>or <em>The Cincinnati Enquirer?\u00a0 <\/em>Does that mean the state should purchase airtime for people to speak their minds on their local radio station?\u00a0 Does it mean that Ohio should buy guns for people who can\u2019t afford them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Of course not!\u00a0 Nobody says that the right to something means there is a public responsibility to pay for that right for those who want but can\u2019t afford it.\u00a0 If that\u2019s true in all the cases I just mentioned, why shouldn\u2019t it be true in the case of abortion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\" style=\"font-size:23px\">Do you think it\u2019s fair to force taxpayers against abortion to pay for it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\" style=\"font-size:23px\">Do you want to pay for abortions out of your taxes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\" style=\"font-size:23px\">If your answer is \u201cNO,\u201d that has to be your vote November 7 on Issue One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\">(If this message opened your eyes, pass it along).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The question is pretty straightforward: should every Ohio taxpayer, regardless of how he feels about abortion, have to pay for it?
