While the lack of clarity in the number of abortions is alarming, the spread of do-it-yourself at-home abortions means that neither report is telling the whole story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The CDC found that the number of abortions in 2020 decreased 2% from 2019. That seems like good news. Unfortunately, Guttmacher found that there\u2019s been an 8% increase from 2017 to 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Why don\u2019t these two reports agree?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The CDC issues an annual report of abortion surveillance in the United States by collecting data from those states that choose to submit their data (California, Maryland, and New Hampshire don\u2019t do so).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In contrast, the Guttmacher Institute\u2014formerly the research arm of Planned Parenthood\u2014surveys abortion providers and clinics directly. This \u201cAbortion Provider Census\u201d is done every three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Why is there likely an undercount?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">First, the CDC is missing data from abortion-friendly states like California and Maryland.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Second, the growing use of abortion pills at home makes it harder to count actual abortions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">At the federal level, a better path forward should start with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li>Creating a streamlined national standard for abortion reporting to encompass data from all states and territories to ensure that federal abortion data is both reliable and accurate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reversing the Food and Drug Administration\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001uMSKosvMdIMMH_-5ieTwa0vdsNY5-xLuRFHwIJNRT_DVSFmH434NNlhWFxfnIy9eCEbMnnp2nroyopM9gyl_kZQPGwE_X-yOgE9RVc2BUQ2XyToXIDfrny2eDmJnBiAkl2aCfCCHIbCnbBPew-NsmkUo28qgiDRtHUyrmz3wGwfxJjcZEuyjsHYRTJoxTgJpED52Oq7w_h1UP9oXhoIyR74s34fkjr9qyOW0cCGMriV3-hNAblZek5OtZTkC7lg0SZUuCN8CDxTsy0EHmEmhrpwnylHvkBJl&amp;c=1SIbzK2cquR9CL0P0rGxQEKs6jmLehjq9EgbF_sV3FSOaz78yvZavA==&amp;ch=jLbP3lYjMezY5UZUTwQwJRaVBTEStxXnJ_0wAv5FVaCvGpOuPb4yXQ==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decision<\/a>&nbsp;allowing telemedicine abortion, abortion pill by mail, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001uMSKosvMdIMMH_-5ieTwa0vdsNY5-xLuRFHwIJNRT_DVSFmH434NNsGYxjsOwzd1iFdOavz37_RX7cCw8dGnM1nQCJrJykE2yotLVXw_SMweySCwpI9MAKHshhTq6Yj6udGGUHoQaL5wZkoaF-6eQo5GEjvTEqTax0HdBRrDpn4EnVzjjXct90aGLG0h5wJGJ04emahzdNrYOzKd3U6VDxdJNU8RDA5UdawjYVcUKW8V7pnM6TShKjdRAaJnmoDf&amp;c=1SIbzK2cquR9CL0P0rGxQEKs6jmLehjq9EgbF_sV3FSOaz78yvZavA==&amp;ch=jLbP3lYjMezY5UZUTwQwJRaVBTEStxXnJ_0wAv5FVaCvGpOuPb4yXQ==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">retail pharmacies<\/a>&nbsp;to dispense abortion pills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enforcing existing laws and preventing international actors from shipping chemical abortion drugs to women in the United States while prosecuting those who fail to comply.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">These actions would help address the problem of counting\u2014and undercounting\u2014the number of abortions that occur in the U.S. each year.
